Pipes with a Story
For pipers who want an instrument as unique as their playing, Dunbar offers both custom commissions and historically faithful reproductions. Whether you dream of a 19th-century MacDougall, a wartime Robertson, or a Henderson built to vintage bore specifications, we can bring it to life.
Our reproductions capture every detail — from bore profile to mount style — while benefiting from modern precision and reliability. And with custom commissions, you can go one step further: choosing the maker, era, wood, mounts, and engraving that define your ideal set.
Master craftsman Rick Pettigrew, one of the world’s most experienced bagpipe restorers, pours decades of knowledge into every build. The result is an instrument that is visually exact, tonally authentic, and tailored to you.
What We Offer
- Historic Reproductions – Exact bore measurements, mount styles, and period details based on original sets.
- Custom Commissions – Select your pipemaker, era, and style. Appoint the set with exotic woods, hand engraving, or ceremonial silver.
- Collector-Grade Builds – Museum-quality craftsmanship for performance, competition, or heirloom presentation.
What Are Reproduction Bagpipes?
Reproduction bagpipes are newly built instruments that faithfully replicate the great sets of the past. Using originals as reference, we duplicate their dimensions, materials, and tonal character. The result is a brand-new instrument that looks, feels, and sounds like a classic, without the fragility of antique pipes.
Where antiques can be rare and delicate, reproductions let you enjoy historic tone with the strength and dependability of modern craftsmanship.
Why Choose a Reproduction?
- Experience historic sound without risking a 140-year-old set
- Play with confidence — warranty-backed durability and stability
- Own a legacy instrument you can pass down for generations
- Customize mounts, engraving, and materials while preserving authenticity
Built in Collaboration
Each reproduction begins with a historic reference set sourced from collectors or master pipers. Every bore, mount, and profile is measured with precision. We collaborate with Jim McGillivray and other piping historians to ensure accuracy, and with engravers such as David Davidse (Truehand Engraving) to recreate period-correct decoration.
Playable History, Built for the Future
Our reproductions aren’t just replicas. They are living continuations of Henderson, MacDougall, Robertson, Glen, and other great traditions — reimagined for today’s pipers. With a custom commission, you can even request a reproduction of your preferred maker and year, crafted exactly to your specifications.
